Alternative
A background remover that does not start with an upload.
The tool on the homepage downloads an open model into your browser and removes the background there. Full resolution, no account, no watermark. BiRefNet and BEN2 are MIT. U²-Net is Apache-2.0. The first pass uses the 4.6 MB model so the cutout is not waiting on a larger download.
If an integration already speaks that request shape, the paid API is familiar on purpose, so the move can stay small. remover.dev is its own product. It uses U²-NetP, Apache-2.0, so billing does not depend on a non-commercial model. Quality is a compatibility matte: fine hair will not match a large GPU model on every photo.
Is the browser tool free?
Yes. Removals on the homepage are unlimited, full resolution, and need no account. The photo is not uploaded.
Does the API store images?
No. POST /v1.0/removebg segments the request and does not write the file to storage.
Which model does the API use?
The paid API runs U²-NetP, Apache-2.0. It is a compatibility matte, not the remove.bg model. Browser models include BiRefNet and BEN2 (MIT) and U²-Net (Apache-2.0). Bria RMBG is not shipped.
